PRINCE2 COMPONENTS - Configuration Management

An organisation must manage its assets which are the products that are developed from projects. The combined set of assets is configuration.

The purpose of configuration management is to identify, track and protect the projects products.

Configuration management give control of the projects products by allowing management to:

  • Specify versions of products in use and existence and hold information on:
    o Their status
o Who is responsible for each product
    o The relationships between products
  • Maintain up-to-date records containing these pieces of information
  • Control changes to the products by ensuring changes are made only with the agreement of an appropriate authority.
  • Audit the records to ensure they contain authorised products.

Configuration management is not optional. If more than one version of a product has been created, then configuration management is being performed.

Configuration Management consists of five functions:

  • Planning - what level of configuration management will be required by the project.
  • Identification - specifying the components of the final product.
  • Control - ability to agree and baseline products and to make changes only with agreement of appropriate authority.
  • Status accounting - the recording and reporting of all current and historical data for each product.
  • Verification - a series of reviews and configuration audits to ensure actual status of products matches.
