PRINCE2 COMPONENTS - Controls

Controls are all about decision making and are central to project management.

The purpose of control is to ensure that the project:

  • Remains viable against its Business Case.
  • Is producing the required products which meet the defined quality criteria.
  • Is being carried out to schedule in accordance with its resource and cost plans.

Controls will ensure that at all times during the project, each level of management are able to monitor progress, compare actual achievement with the plan, review the plans and options against future situations, detect and rectify problems, identify risks and authorise future work.
Many controls are event driven and will trigger a decision making process. Time driven controls are identified where status information is provided at regular intervals of time during the project.

The Project Board uses Directing a Project as its main control points throughout the project. These are key decision points for the Project during which the Project Board will assess the continuing viability of the project. The Project Board will Manager by Exception and to do this will set Tolerance for the Project Manager. This is another key control for the Project Board.

The Project Manager has day-to-day control of the project and can make adjustments to a stage on the provision that it remains within the set stage tolerances.

A Project Manager does this by authorising Work Packages, approving the Team Plan, receiving Checkpoint Reports from the Team manager and checking the Quality Log to ensure quality checks and standards are being carried out.
